Wondering why become a freelance writer? Considering it as a career path but not sure if it’s the right one for you? Tired of the 9-5 corporate grind?
I hear you.
Whether you’ve been thinking of becoming a freelance writer for a while now or you’re completely new to the notion, allow me to help you make your decision.
Needless to say, there are many benefits of undergoing this type of freelance work as a way of paying the bills at the end of every month.
However, you’ve got to be motivated and self-disciplined to be able to not only build a successful writing business but also sustain it. It’s a lot of hard work before you can reap the rewards. That said, boy, are they are worth it. Trust me.
Why become a freelance writer? Well, here my top 10 reasons.
1. You Are Your Own Boss
Why become a freelance writer 101: you get to make your own rules.
Gone are the days where you have a manager breathing down your neck because an important deadline is coming up thick and fast and you haven’t yet completed the work due to the sheer volume of it all.
You can also kiss goodbye to bosses or colleagues who have belittled you, been uncaring or were trying to put you down just because it made them feel that little bit better about themselves.
You are now in charge of your own work schedule and, believe me, the power that comes with this feels incredible.
2. You Set Your Own Hours
Speaking of power, in the words of Spiderman: “with great power comes great responsibility.”
In addition to the awesomeness that comes with being your own boss, you’re also in charge of how much work you do and when you decide to do the work.
Got to take the kids to school? Need to walk the dog? Got a doctor’s appointment? No worries – you can work around a schedule that suits your lifestyle.
Sure, you might need to work long hours at first until your business is well and truly up and running. However, the ultimate flexibility that comes with being a freelance writer will make it all worthwhile in the end.
3. You Get to Unleash Your Creativity
If you’re already working as a freelance writer or if you’re thinking about heading down this career path, then you must be a creative person – right?
After all, you are creating pieces of content from scratch based on your own innovative ideas, expertise and knowledge. Therefore, the beauty of being a freelance writer is you get to tap into this creativity every single day.
Personally, I get a strange sense of satisfaction when I complete an assignment as a freelance writer. I’m like, yay, I managed to turn this chaotic jumble of words and thoughts that are scrambling around in my brain into a piece of writing that actually makes sense to other humans!
4. You Get to Decide When You Have Time Off
Seriously, why become a freelance writer? Well, I don’t know about you, but I always used to feel guilty about taking time off from my past office jobs.
Co-workers would always make a big song and dance out of it with “handovers” being done every day in the week running up to a holiday. This often gave me an overwhelming crippling sense of anxiety thanks to the pressure of needing everything to get done beforehand.
And what about that crippling sense of anxiety I got when it was time to return to the office? I would panic about what I’d missed while I’d been gone, and then spend the first couple of days I got back working extra hard to catch up.
It was tough, to say the least.
The beauty of having your own freelance writing business is that you can have time off whenever you darn well feel like it. Of course, if you’re having time off all of the time then it’s likely you’ll be unable to sustain a successful business. It goes without saying that it’s up to you to put in the hours.
Having said that, it’s undoubtedly nice to have the flexibility and less stress that comes with being a freelance writer.
5. You Get to Do What You Love for a Living
If you’ve got a passion for writing, image curation and digital marketing, then there’s no better career for you than being a freelance writer.
On a personal note, I’ve been harbouring a dream to write for a living since I was at school and my Year Two teacher told my parents I had a way with words. Check me out.
I started blogging as a hobby at university and recently turned that hobby into a money-making niche blog, KatieKat. I then started accepting freelance writing gigs as a side hustle and the rest, as they say, is history.
Whether you want to run your own blog or copywrite for other businesses, if you love all-things content creation then being a freelance writer will be the most fulfilling job for you.
6. There’s Always Demand for Content
Freelance writing beginners always worry that they’re never going to get any work or make enough money from their business.
There’ll be too much competition for each opportunity and more experienced freelance writers will pip them to the post. Consequently, they’ll end up sitting alone with their laptop in a dark room sobbing and wondering why on God’s green earth they ever chose to give up the stability of a 9-5 job.
I, too, had this fear. In fact, it was the fear. However, I don’t anymore. You want to know why? Because there’s always so much work available to go around. The internet is always evolving, people are always building new websites and consumers always want fresh content to read. Click To Tweet
Sure, it might take a bit of time to build up your client list or a new audience, but you will get there eventually. If I can do it, you can too.
7. It’s Well Paid
Want another reason when it comes to why become a freelance writer? The mullah, of course.
Sure, when you’re starting out as a freelance blogger, you have to expect that you won’t be paid too much for your work.
Like with any job, you have to start from the bottom (cue Drake’s song) to get to the place where you want to be.
Don’t devalue yourself but, at the same time, accept that you might have to take on opportunities that might only pay for a dinner or two out. It’s not ideal, but the experience is invaluable, especially if the client is prepared to give you an amazing testimonial at the end of it all or you’re working with a well-known brand.
That said, as you become more experienced and your writing skills improve, you’ll be able to increase your rate accordingly and aim for more lucrative opportunities.
In fact, a lot of freelance writers are currently on six figures for their work, which goes to show that there’s a lot of money to be made in this industry.
8. The Variety of Work Keeps Things Interesting
I have to admit, I have a teensy, tiny weakness in life… I get bored easily.
However, with freelance writing, it’s practically impossible to get bored.
Things are constantly changing all the time in my working world. For instance, new clients are coming on board, new blog post topics are being assigned every single day and new emails are coming in about potential collaborations – and this only just scratches the surface!
I love freelance writing not just because I love to write, but also because the opportunities that come with the job are endless.
And you know what they say: variety is the spice of life.
9. You Can Pick and Choose Who You Work With
If you’re still questioning: “why become a freelance writer” then listen up. Another great thing about freelancing for a career is that you get to choose who you work with.
Even though the majority of other writers, clients and brands will be lovely and a dream to work with, there’ll still be the odd one or two that are stubborn, demanding or unreasonable in some way.As a freelance writer, if you don’t want to work with someone for whatever reason, then you don’t have to. You’re not in a 9-5 job anymore with a lack of control.Click To Tweet
Luckily, as freelance writers, we have a choice. Therefore, make sure you use it wisely.
10. You’re Location Independent
Being an avid traveller, this is my favourite reason why you should become a freelance writer.
FREEEEEEEEEEEEEDOMMMMMMMM – William Wallace-style!
As a freelance writer and digital nomad, there aren’t any boundaries when it comes to where you work. If you’re happy working from home, as you have two kids and a mortgage, then be my guest.
Having said that, if you’re like me and you can’t sit still for two darn minutes, then you can simply head off to your local café, visit your friend across the country or go jetsetting halfway around the world.
The sky’s the limit, freelancer writer – so why not make the most of this opportunity while you have it?
You fortunate thing, you.
Why Become a Freelance Writer? What Does It Take?
I can’t stress enough how amazing freelance writing is as a career. It’s honestly changed my life for the better.
If you’re questioning whether to become a freelance writer, ask yourself the following questions:
- Do I love to write and edit copy?
- Do I like to curate pretty imagery?
- Would I thrive at being my own boss and creating my own schedule?
- Can I stay motivated at times of uncertainty?
- Do I have the discipline to live the self-employed life?
If you answered yes to these questions, then we might just make a freelance writer of you yet. On the other hand, if you answered no to essentially every question, then you might want to rethink it as a career path or just write as a hobby.
